In the article it mentioned how "Nolan's films are typically rooted in epistemological and metaphysical themes", and I decided to follow the link on the word "metaphysical". Metaphysics is "the branch of philosophy that studies the essence of a thing" meaning it questions "being, becoming, existence and reality". The word Metaphysics comes from the Greek word meaning 'beyond nature'. Overall metaphysics seeks to investigate, "existence, objects and their properties, space and time, cause and effect, and possibility." It was here that I followed the link on "cause and effect" that led me to a page on Causality.
Causality (or cause and effect) is where "the first is partly responsible for the second, and the second is partly dependent on the first". A great example of this would be The Butterfly Effect, where a butterfly can flap its wings now and in a few weeks there will be a tornado, although this is not necessarily in direct correlation. That is one of the original writings and understandings on the topic of The Butterfly Effect. Many reckon that reasonable intuition is needed to help understand causality and the topic "remains a staple in contemporary philosophy".
"Intuition" is the last link I followed from the causality page. Intuition is described as "the ability to acquire knowledge without proof, evidence, or conscious reasoning, or without understanding how the knowledge was acquired." Many writers debate if intuition has different meanings from unconscious knowledge to the ability to understand something instinctively. There are also philosophers who debate whether the term is misunderstood to mean instinct, belief or meaning, but these are things that can be seen as factually related, compared to intuition which can be seen as a way of unconscious comprehension of a subject or topic.
