Game Brainstorms
Four types of games that I would like to possibly develop in the future.
1. First-Person Shooter
Inspired by the likes of classic shooter games from Doom (1993) to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007) I would like to create a simple First-Person Shooter (FPS) game. Having started our Unity tutorials in Week 2 and creating a simple environment to run around in I think it would be an interesting challenge. There are scripts and tutorials (from none other than Jimmy Vegas himself) available online on how to make a FPS game. He goes in depth on how to make a basic shooter and I feel that if I was to watch his videos it would be possible to bring that knowledge into my own environment. The video series even goes as far as to create spider enemies that you can shoot in game. My overall idea would be to create a presentable and fully working level where you have to shoot all of the spiders to complete the level. I would also be thinking that I could have five "waves" of the spiders that you have to kill in order to finish the level, adding a bit more depth and task to the level.
In terms of graphics I am not too pushed on having the next award-winning open world shooter that the grass and water moves and the weather changes every 10 minutes in game. Simple graphics and textures in a mountainous/woodlands environment that works is good enough for me. Having said that a simple game by modern standards, the 2007 classic Medal of Honour: Airborne has most of its fighting in urban settings during WW2. The textures are simple but effective in setting the tone of the levels.

2. First-Person Adventure Game
My second idea is a First-Person Adventure game inspired by the likes of Oblivion (2006) and Skyrim (2011) which are both part of the same game series; The Elder Scrolls. My idea is to create a moderately large open world with mountains, woods, creeks and a small waterfall. The objective of the game will be to collect gems like the ones we made in the first Unity tutorial. I would like the game to have dialogue pop up boxes that create a bit of a narrative and also instruct the player on how to move, jump and use other controls. I think it would be a nice homage to The Elder Scrolls games to have your main weapon be a sword and to possibly have to defeat skeleton enemies as a challenging side objective in the players quest to collect all the gems.
3. Jump Adventure Game
My third idea would be to have a 3D version of Super Mario where the objective of the game is to run around and jump on enemies to progress. Much like my FPS idea the enemies could come in five waves, each more difficult than the last to help make it more challenging. In terms of graphics/textures I would like to make the game look very cartoon-like (example below) to somewhat resemble Super Mario and similar games, and to give it a somewhat childish and nostalgic feel for older players. The world I would create for this idea would most likely consist of small hills, trees, some running water that the player could possibly bob along in (similar to Minecraft) and a bright sky with puffy white clouds. I would love the lighting to be bright to really give the Mario/Minecraft feel to the game.

4. Open World Detective Game
A little different from the rest as this one does not revolve around any form of violence, whether childish or otherwise, my last idea is to have a detective game where the player has to follow a series of clues in a small open world. I think with this world it would be cool to use some basic house structures (like in PUBG) that you can explore, as well as outside with the usual trees and water sources. I think it would be nice to have items that you can interact with to give you the clues in a dialogue box, and a counter on the right hand side of the screen to let you know which clues you have collected e.g. Clues A-E. These could possibly be selected to read their dialogue boxes again by utilising the F keys on the keyboard e.g. press F1 to bring up Clue A etc.
Hi Chris! Great Blog, the lay out is really good and it was very interesting to read. I like all of your ideas as I can relate to all the games in them, they literally are all classics! I like the last one as it is something different and reminds me of that old DS game, Professor Layton I think it was called. It'd be interesting to see when you're finished, Good Luck!
ReplyDeleteHey Chris!
ReplyDeleteYour first-person action adventure game sounds cool, I'm glad to see that Skyrim was your inspiration because that game is lit. Good idea having the gems because it's something we have already know how to do. Can't wait to hear more about the game you decide to make. I think you could get really creative with some of those ideas.
Hey Chris! Nice selection of genres there, very similar to my own too I think they're the most interesting genres out of them all. Your jump game idea sounds cool I'd definitely play it! Minecraft and Super Mario Bros are great inspirations for that, Mario Bros is my childhood. I also love the open world detective game idea you have there. Reading it reminds me of that game called Professor Layton and The Curious Village, very similar game play which is great because that's my favourite game. Really creative ideas I think you'd be great with game design!
ReplyDeleteHi Chris really like the post and what you're going for and cant wait to see what comes out of it. I really really like the open-world Detective game idea that can be taken in multiple in directions and can be set in any time era,( L.A Noire?). Anyways I'm also looking forward to how you pull of you're jump adventure game as I had a similar idea in mind and seeing some else think of it too is good in my mind. Cant wait to see what comes out of this.
ReplyDeleteHey Chris, Its really interesting what is going to be inspiring and the influences you listed out. The blog post was rather interesting and great to read indeed. An open world detective game seems unique too and taking inspiration from Minecraft and Mario is a good idea too as they are great games that could feed into something awesome indeed. Cant wait to see what you cook up man and good luck!
ReplyDeleteHi Chris.
ReplyDeleteI've read through all your 4 ideas, they're very interesting and really great. Nice blog! I really like your idea on Jump Adventure Game and see where you got your inspiration from Super Mario. I too loved that game when I was a younger and never really get a chance to play it anymore. Would love to see how your game turn out. Good luck! :)
