Game Vision Statement

The purpose of this blog post is to create a vision statement for my game, so I can lay out my vision in sufficient detail to implement it.

Skeleton Quest is a first person adventure game made with the Unity 3D engine. You play as the hero Stephen, exploring the vast open world and fighting skeletons and spiders as you collect gems in your quest to clear the world of the undead. It is the second idea in this previous blog post.

Genre: First-Person Adventure

Platform: Windows, Mac and Linux. The game will be playable with a keyboard and mouse, with possible adaptation for an Xbox One controller in the future.

Gameplay: The game will handle similarly to other first person games like Skyrim, Fallout or Call of Duty. The player will have an open world in which to explore and collect a number of gems to complete the game. The game and controls will be thought to the player through pop up messages.
To challenge the player they will need to explore the open world and go through water as well as to the top of hills and mountains to find some of these gems, as well as having to defeat skeleton and spider enemies along the way.
To help engage the player more in the game there will be a counter for the number of gems collected, as well as there being some gems only available through defeating enemies.
The story itself will be driven by the player's exploration of the world, and the feeling of accomplishment throughout.

Target Market: Children and Teens. There will be no cursing or blood in the game, so it will be suitable for children.

Description: You play as Stephen, our sole human hero. Your objective is to explore the world and find all the missing gems. They are the key to banishing your undead foes. Along the way you will face skeletons and spiders and you will have to use your trusty sword to defeat them!
Explore through a large open world with mountains, forests and lakes.
Defeat the enemies in your path on your quest to collect the missing gems.
Do this, and the world will finally be rid of the undead skeletons, and humanity can flourish once more!

  1. Hi Chris, your game sounds awesome but at the same time I feel like it lacks some necessary detail. You should talk about the movement and controls in general. Like how will they move around and stuff and attack enemies. Will they have any weapons? Can they pick up weapons? They should that would be kinda cool. Also how will the game end? Is there an end goal? And lastly, how will the characters look like? Will there be dialogue? How will the game start? So ye these things need to be worked on, but overall great work!

  2. Hi Chris, I like your game idea it is similar to mine, it seems a lot of us are doing games based around collecting gems it must be the fact Spyro came out. I like the idea that some gems will only be accessible after defeating an enemy. I wonder are you going to have it so different gems are worth more or will they all be worth the same and is there an end to do with the story or based on how many gems you have? I also think it would be cool if you had some under water to really feel like they can be hidden anywhere and everywhere. Good luck with it!

  3. Hey Chris!,
I really enjoyed reading through your Game Vision Statement for your game idea project. I found your Vision Statement to be really detailed and interesting. What type of songs will you play during your game? What will the backing track be like? I can't wait to see the further development for your game. I look forward to seeing how you will implement all these features that you mentioned in your game. Anyways I really liked your Game Vision Statement. Best of luck with the development of your game and the end result too!

  4. Hi Chris!
Good game vision statement for your project. Like Jamie said, a lot of people seem to be doing games based on collecting gems but it will be good to see how different each game will be. Exploring this would should be fun. Will there be other enemy types with the spider and skeleton enemies. Looking forward to seeing your final game and good luck.

  5. Hey chris!
sick vision statement my guy, Game seems interesting but a bit bland if im honest.
the whole searching for gems thing is constantly being repeated and its just not interesting anymore (in my personal opinion) But i am pretty sure you will prove me wrong!
Other then that mechanics seem good, and all the tutorials fit perfectly to help you develop this game
so im looking forward to giving your game a try and i cant wait to see what you do with it!
    best of luck buddy

Game Design

Cover of ' The Art of Computer Game Design ' by Chris Crawford, 1984 After finishing reading through the Reading Material for Week 2 I have learned some things I didn't know previously. For instance I did not know that the card game 'Magic: The Gathering' helped to " triple the size of the hobby games industry ". I also did not realise there was such thing as a cross between a LARP (Live Action Role-playing Game) and traditional theater, such as the play ' Tony & Tina's Wedding '. Reading through the articles made me realise that game design goes much further past the traditional board and card games and usual video games. I had heard about LARP and "Choose Your Own Ending" books, but they do not come to mind when you think about game design. I know that when it comes to creating my own game I will have to take different game types into consideration, and they could in turn become influences and inspirations for my own game...

Unity Tutorial 01

Unity Logo - Source Having started with the three Unity tutorials I can say I am excited to delve further into game development over the next few weeks. The first tutorial is a bit slow and of course I sat there frustrated because I wanted to dive straight into making games but towards the end of the video it picks up a bit and we get into making basic hills on a blank terrain. In the second tutorial we get into using assets and adding texture on to the terrain. I found this simple enough and was happy to play around with the brush tools and the opacity and height to create different hills, and to smooth them out or make them jagged. I am already getting ideas for how I can use this in future projects/game worlds and I can see how they utilised it in mountainous areas in games such as Skyrim. It was nice to use the dirt and grass textures to add colour to the world, even though they were quite basic looking to what would be in a finished game. The third tutorial shows us how to w...

Favourite Game

My Favourite Game Battlefield 1 is currently my favourite game to play. I have been playing it since it's release in 2016 and although I take a break from it to put time into other games I always find I come back to it. Battlefield 1's campaign is short and fun, with a lot of insight into the history of WW1. The multiplayer feature is where I spend my time in the game though, playing in battles of 32 vs. 32 players on each team, spread across some of the largest battlefields of WW1. The game is beautifully made, with realistic graphics and animations and the playable maps in the game take direct influence from photos and stories of the real battlefields from the time.
